Letters to our chickens

Last term we received a bundle of letters from Elmwood Normal School in Christchurch. The letters were addressed to our chickens and our students. Today we read the letters to our chickens.

The really seemed to enjoy the attention and the letters. The chickens would run up and down the fence listening to all the kind words in the letters.

When we got back to class we had a discussion about how the chickens could return the kindness shown to them. The class decided that writing letters back to the students would be the best way.

KiwiCan -Integrity

Today we had our last session for the term with KiwiCan. This term we have been learning about the value integrity. Integrity means being honest, responsible and reliable and means doing the right thing when no one is watching.

EnviroSchool - Worm Warren

Everyday our Enviro Agents perform a range of tasks that help keep our school waste sustainable. One of these very important tasks is caring for our tiger worms that live in the 'Worm Warren'.

According to Wikipedia ~ About Our Tiger Worms~
Eisenia fetida, known under various common names such as redworm, brandling worm, panfish worm, trout worm, tiger worm, red wiggler worm, red californian earth worm, is a species of earthworm adapted to decaying organic material. These worms thrive in rotting vegetationcompost, and manure
Eisenia fetida worms are used for vermicomposting. They are native to Europe, but have been introduced (both intentionally and unintentionally) to every other continent except Antarctica.

Every day our agents collect all the food scrapes that are suitable for worms. Our worms can not eat citrus, bread or meat. Once all of the worm buckets have been emptied they head down to the worm baths where the vermicomposting occurs.

Our flag Referendum

Today in class we had a discussion about the current New Zealand Referendum. Some of us were excited that our flag could change while others wanted to keep the current flag.

We opened the letter with our teacher and looked at the different brochures. We then had the chance to place our votes and placed them in our post box.

Once all of the votes were posted we opened the box and counted them up

The results were very interesting and made for great discussion.

Duffy Theatre

Jumping with excitement the children raised their voices yelling "yay".

The Duffy Theatre came all the way from busy Auckland with its 3 actors. It was a great experience.

They did a unique show about a young Duffy going back in time to save Ruby's dad who was fighting in World War 2. Duffy wanted to save her dad so she could read.

Thank you Duffy Theartre for an awesome show.

Preparing our garden

Friday afternoon B1 went to the back of the school to prepare our garden beds.

We started by weeding the gardens by using the garden forks to get at the surface and feeding the chickens the plants that had gone to seed.

Next we watered the garden and tidied the garden up.
We are now ready to plant our garden with the plants we received from The Plant Place.

Our Garden

Yesterday we received a batch of plants from The Plant Place. Mr. Munroe popped down to collect them, at lunch time. We are so excited to be able to plant the vegetables into our gardens. We want to say thank you to Bruce at The Plant Place and well be planting the vegetables soon.

Project Energise

Today we had Lindsay from Project Energise take use for some different drills. We had to run, skip, hop, kick and dribble a ball as well as show how we do a two handed strike.

It was very hot but good to be outside playing.

A message from Mr Willis

Good Morning B1,

I wish I could be with you today, your first day of school for 2016, but unfortunately I am away until Friday.  Where am I?? I am doing exactly the same thing as you. I am currently sitting in a small school north of Auckland, called Wainui Primary School.  I am here to learn how to better teach you writing.

Enjoy cooling off swimming and I can't wait to meet you all on Friday.
